There are some events in Canadian history that show the world that we are not just another one of Britain’s colonies, events that show the world that we are our own country and we decide what is best for Canadians and for other people in other countries. There are also Canadian people who have made a difference in Canada and even the world. The events and the people that are significant in Canadian history are Canada joins the Korean War, the Gulf War, Terry Fox, Pierre Trudeau and Lester B. Pearson. They have shown how Canadians contribute in their own country and in other parts of the world. In every decade starting from the 1950s Canadian people or events have truly made a difference and are significant in Canada’s history.

In the 1950s after World War II the United Nations has been in place for five years and works to promote peace throughout the world. However a crisis is beginning to occur in Korea between the people. After WWII Japans empire was destroyed and the Soviet Union occupied North Korea seeking to gain influence in the region, the Americans were moving into South Korea. Both groups left but not before establishing a communist government in the North and a democratic government in the South. The tension between the two countries was rising and on June 25, 1950 North Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel into South Korea. The UN created a solution that involved force in order to preserve peace with the contribution of military forces from sixteen different countries including Canada.

Loss of identity can be both a fascinating and very painful trait for a person to possess. Throughout his work, Truman Capote consistently employs characters who are far from self actualization. This can be seen through his use of descriptive imagery which often illustrates the different ways that someone far from self actualization can be perceived by both themselves and others.
Breakfast at Tiffany's is the story of a young writer, Paul Varjak's encounter and eventual love affair with his enchantingly eccentric neighbor Holly Golightly. Those who don't know Holly all that well receive the impression that she is not much more than the beautiful, carefree facade she puts forth. With a closer look, Paul finds that she is not who she seems to be. Holly has always struggled to find her identity and plays whatever character suits her fancy.
Other Voices, Other Rooms is about Joel Knox, a twelve year old boy who, after the death of his mother receives an invitation to live with his absentee father on Skully's Landing. Not only is the landing itself isolated, but so is Joel. Due to his dainty femininity he has always been alienated by his peers. Joel's feelings of isolation combined with a lack of knowledge about his living family create a lot of identity problems for Joel during his formative years.
Holly Golightly, while not the narrator of Breakfast at Tiffany's remains the main focus of the novel. When describing her through the eyes of others using imagery to minutely describe his physical appearance Truman Capote often draws upon her beauty and her seemingly magnetic aura that draws people in ""The ragbag color of her boy's hair, tawny streaks, strands of albino-blonde and yellow caught the hall light"" (13). illustrates how she often catches the light and portrays her as a shining beacon of sorts. The many colors in her hair can also be viewed as symbolism for Holly's many personalities, all characters that she puts on for people to see. Other times, Holly lets small pieces of her insecurities show through what she wants everyone to believe her handwriting for instance is described as ""freakishly, awkward kindergarten hand"" (28).

In this essay I am going to review a number of sources to figure out whether Britain showed tolerance or intolerance to immigration throughout the 19th and 20th century.

In source 1 it shows the feelings of the Anglo Jews about the immigration of foreign Jews from places such as Poland and Russia. The source tells us that the Anglo Jews were worried about other Jews coming over and spoiling their good relations that they had already built with the British, this shows intolerance towards immigration. The source also says “ Anglo Jews were also concerned at the prospect of so many poor Jews coming to Britain who would need financial help”, this meant that they weren’t too keen on helping out if they did come, again showing intolerance. The source isn’t very reliable because its not signed or dated so whoever wrote it could’ve been biased or somewhat influenced.

Source 2 shows a large family crowded round in a small room with a table in the middle, the living conditions look crowded and dirty, there is also someone laid looking ill in bed, from all of this we gather that Jews weren’t living in the best conditions when they got here, this was probably because they weren’t being given good jobs or being sold good housing, this shows prejudice and intolerance. This source isn’t very reliable because it doesn’t say who drew it and for what purpose, meaning it could’ve been drawn by a Jewish man being biased and over exaggerating.

Source 3 shows what a survey came up with about Jewish immigrants and their new lifestyles in England, it was written by Beatrice Potter about a Jewish community and how it thrived on the hard work of Jewish men and women, this shows some tolerance because the British are appreciating their way of life and how it helps their country. This source is very reliable because it was done by someone outside of the community who wasn’t going to be biased or exaggerate things.
