New Methods of Teaching Children with Autistic Traits

It is only in the last decade or so that Autism has become more widely accepted as a diagnosis in children, and there are more acceptances to living with, dealing with and teaching Autistic children. In previous years children with Autism were largely misunderstood and socially branded as misfits, labelled as "slow", "problem child" and "delinquent", who constantly disrupted classrooms and playgrounds. As we have become more and more aware of the fundamental issues surrounding Autism, we are able to better cope with the children that have for so many years desperately needed our guidance, understanding, patience and determination. Many people, who had never even heard of Autism, come to not only know about it, but learn about the developmental disorder, when the movie of Temple Grandi'ns life was released in 2010.

Temple Grandin is an American woman who was born with Autism, but it was only recognized when she turned 15 years old. And, it was through the tenacity and sheer determination of her mother, who refused to put Temple in an institution that we have to thank for such a pioneer in the fields of understanding, being educated on and living with Autism today.

Today, Temple Grandin is classified as having high functioning Autism. She is an American Doctor in Animal Science, a bestselling author, professor at Colorado University and an integral consultant to the livestock industry. Which is a testament to just how much one can accomplish when the basics are managed and met, starting in the classroom.

Despite such growth in the knowledge about Autism, there is still a huge amount of confusion amongst parents and teachers who deal with Autistic children today. Autistic children are more disruptive in a classroom situation, when their needs are not met, and their challenging behaviour patterns have them marked as problem children.
Autistic children have an above average intelligence, and when they have the opportunity to find themselves in a classroom with a dedicated teacher who is committed to channelling their intelligence and managing their behaviour, their world is finally open. There is much more provision being made now in classrooms all around the world for children with Autism, and there are many new teaching methods being discussed, planned and integrated into schools to help everybody get the most out of their education.
One of the latest methods to be integrated into the main stream school system is the TEACCH system or (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication-Handicapped Children)

Because many Autistic children respond to using pictures as their first language and words as their second, this method helps kids use pictures to communicate in class. It also helps to provide a structured classroom, which can help alleviate the anxiety and stress that some Autistic children can experience in a class environment, when there is sensory overload.

The philosophy of TEACCH is the following: TEACCH respects "the culture of autism" and embraces a philosophy that people with autism have "characteristics that are different, but not necessarily inferior, to the rest of us. The person is the priority, rather than any philosophical notion like inclusion, discrete trial training or facilitated communication.’’

The TEACCH method is still somewhat of a controversial new addition to the class room as it has been documented that this method does not pay enough attention to the verbal and social interaction development side of educating kids with Autism.
There is an abundance of studies and new methods being tried, tested and documented in the teaching industry in an effort to try and support children with Autism and help them get the proper education the deserve and need.
Most schools have developed their own programs based on the ABA, or Applied Behavioural Analysis method. Using this method works with the idea that if you change the environment, you can change the behaviour.

So instead of giving an instruction, you give the child a group of choices and allow kids to choose and helping to build a relationship with the environment and the world out there, without them becoming frustrated or volatile. ABA can help an Autistic child to be the master of their own desirable outcomes, while directly managing a relationship with the outside world.
